Thanks to a powerful synergy of skills from biology to statistics and computer sciences, we have already analysed biomarker data from over 100 clinical studies ranging from Phase I to Phase IV in different therapeutic areas (Oncology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Metabolic Diseases, Fertility, …).
Jérôme Wojcik, PhD
Chief Executive Officer
After a mathematical M.Sc. and a Ph.D. thesis in Biology, Jerome Wojcik joined Hybrigenics, a start-up biotech company based in Paris, where he managed during 6 years the bioinformatics and IT department. He then joined Serono (now Merck Serono) in Geneva where he started managing a team of bioinformatics scientists developing algorithms adapted to genome-wide genetic association studies. The scope extended quickly to genomics and to biomarkers in general (proteomics, flow cytometry and imaging), leading to the creation of a centralized “Stratified Medicine” department within the organization, regrouping clinical project leaders, labs and bioinformatics. After 7 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Jerome left his position of Director of Global Bioinformatics of Merck Serono to create Quartz Bio
Karl Forner, M.Sc.
Chief Information Officer
Karl obtained a degree in Mathematics and two masters in fundamental and theoretical computer science. He joined Genset, at the time a leading European company in the field of genomics. Within Genset, he developed web applications and several genomics algorithms such as a custom Blast, still in use today. After a brief passage in Pharnext, he joined Merck Serono, leading the Methods and Systems team within the stratified medicine department. During this period, Karl developed some innovative bioinformatics algorithms particularly in the field of SNP analysis and genome-wide associations. Karl is a strong believer and proactive contributor to the Open Source Development model. In 2012 he co-founded Quartz Bio.
Marc Lamarine, PhD
Chief Operating Officer
After his Ph.D. in molecular biophysics, Marc joined Genset, at the time a leading European company in the field of genomics. During this time, he was in charge of structural biology projects within genetic association studies. Marc then moved to Merck Serono where he joined the global bioinformatics department. As a senior bioinformatics scientist, Marc gained a particular expertise in the analysis of gene expression data from blood samples. Amongst his achievements within this company, Marc contributed to the creation of a pharmacogenetics platform aimed at stratifying patients based on gene expression data in clinical trials. In 2012, Marc co-founded Quartz Bio.
Alessandro Di Cara, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer
Alessandro obtained his Ph.D in Cell Biology from the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel. He started programming at the end of his doctorate as a mean to automate the analysis of microarray expression data. After a Post-Doc in system’s biology at Serono, he joined the Stratified Medicine department at Merck Serono as a senior bioinformatic scientist. During this period Alessandro performed clinical bioinformatic analyses aimed at identifying clinical patient sub-groups based on biomarker data. Through his biology background, Alessandro was particularly involved in the analysis of cell-based assays and biological pathways. After 7 years at Merck Serono he co-founded Quartz Bio in 2012.
Claudia Armenise, M.Sc
Senior Bioinformatics Scientist
After two M.Sc. in Bioinformatics and Genetics, Claudia Armenise worked during 3 years in academic laboratories in Paris as a biologist. She then joined the Institute of Human Genetics in Montpellier where she acquired a strong expertise in the analysis of Next-Generation Sequencing data. Within this institute, Claudia performed bioinformatic analyses for major publications in the field of small non-coding RNAs (small RNA-seq and CLIP-seq) and telomeres (ChIP-seq). After 6 years in the academic research, Claudia joined Quartz Bio in May 2013.
Irene Vassalo, PhD
Irene completed her Ph.D in Cancer Biology in the Laboratory of Tumor Biology and Genetics at the University of Lausanne. She stayed on to complete a post-doc in molecular biology during which she also worked extensively on analysis of omics level data such as methylation and gene expression profiles. This prompted her to undertake a second MSc in Statistics at Sheffield University to build on her knowledge in statistical modelling and data analysis. She joined QuartzBio in 2016.
Angélique Heckmann, PhD
Head of Sales
After an engineer degree in Biotechnology, Angélique obtained her PhD thesis in biology from Serono in Geneva working on HIV and cancer in vivo models studying the therapeutics potential of IKK2 inhibitors. Next, as Scientific Consultant Group Leader, she actively contributed to the development genOway, a leading company in the field of gene engineered pre-clinical models. In 2017, Angélique joined Quartz Bio as Head of Sales to support the development of the company on the USA and EMEA markets, she is responsible for the sales, as well as the marketing and communication strategies.
Thomas completed a Master of Engineering in Computer Science in EPITA (Paris) and specialized in statistical software development. With Quartz Bio’s support since 2014, he is completing his Computer Science PhD at the University of Geneva under the supervision of Prof. Voloshynovskiy, in the Stochastic Information Processing laboratory. He works full-time on the European research project PRECISESADS and focuses on heterogeneous biological data clustering for the discovery of a new classification of systemic autoimmune diseases.
